up

More doodles from my journal. I enjoy being quiet and looking intently at things so I could draw them (how well I am able to draw them notwithstanding). I like the squiggly, sometimes rebellious lines that don't go where they're supposed to go; yet, the whole bunch of them somehow giving a relatively recognizable image anyway.

Lazy Monday. It was a holiday. We brought up a couple of collapsible chairs to the rooftop. I brought my journal. I spaced out and doodled. I traced the Makati skyline, the steel bars jutting out of the concrete post of the apartment building, the electric whatchamacallit beside the roof. The sunset was beautiful.

Today, still a free day. Doodled in Starbucks. I think I've doodled everything I can doodle inside a Starbucks coffee shop. I filled several pages just tracing the outline of the coffeemaking merchandise on the display rack. When the aircon got too cold for me, I stepped out and looked up and doodled some more.

Tomorrow will be hellish. No time for my journal for sure.

analog recording

I'm a signature away from finishing my current journal. Actually, a signature and a few spreads. It'll be good to start a new one, a smaller, more compact journal as this is too heavy to lug around. And I lug it around all the time, complete with an assortment of pens, markers, and a date stamper. It takes up quite a bit of space in whatever bag I'm using. It'll probably take me three more weeks to finish it.

I doodle mostly the same things, the same sights. I'm a creature of habit. I like killing time in the same places. I have a regular drink. I like it like that.

new notebook

Fiveandahalf.net posted a great tutorial on how to make an adhesive-bound notebook with photographs as covers. Of course, I didn't come up with anything as great as the samples they had on the site. I wasn't ready with all the materials, and my EQ isn't all that great. I couldn't wait for the glue to dry!!!

I used prints of my shots of Chiyomi from my Witch Project photoshoot as covers. I think I'll have to find a way to have the images printed on board, and not photopaper. And I'll choose BWs next time. Maybe I can have these images printed as BW. Hmm.

The color of the spine doesn't go with the photos, i know. But I was impatient! And I wanted to make the book already! So, I just grabbed whatever I could find. The pages aren't as secure as I had hoped to make them. But, you know... low EQ and all that.

This weekend, I hope to make other notebooks. Perhaps I should stick to sewn ones. Coptic or buttonhole should be good. We will see.

UPDATE:
The binding works ok :) The pages aren't falling apart. I doodled on some of the pages to make it look like the book was printed on :-P

finally some rest

Finally, I get to go home and rest. Not the kind of rest that I had last night (a 3-hr nap), but a real break from work. We pick up our tasks again on Monday, and hopefully, it won't be as tough as the past few days.

The project involved a lot of waiting time, as people who are in my line of work are aware. So, I got a bit of doodling in. Most of the doodles are items that are on my desk. And this other one, which I drew early today after my so-called break from 3AM to 7:30 AM, while waiting sitting with my editor. Yep, that's my editor. Still hard at work after 24 hours.

The office was abuzz with 3 projects at one time, it was chaotic. By lunchtime, I was a bit of a zombie already. I like my sleep. I don't go for the insane and unhealthy schedules that some media people thrive in or even find cool.

Let me chill out at the end of the day. Let me have a proper dinner. Let me have time to read a book or click around the net.

But, I guess I have to bear with occasional uncomfortable deviations from my regular sched. And as long as it remains occasional, I think I can bear it ok.

Now, to try to sleep. Usually when I'm really tired, it's hard to get my mind to settle down.

book binding

coptic bindingI'm feeling the urge to make new notebooks again, just for kicks. I don't really need new ones. My current journal is far from filled. But, looking at notebookism's Flickr photo pool is just inspiring. I'm looking to try using fabric for the cover on my next project. I still have a lot of leftover paper that I can use for the pages.

I made this sunburst notebook some time ago and gave it to my friend Roni. I hope she's using it!

Anyway, I've uploaded photos of my old handmade notebooks to my Journal Flickr set.

cupcake part two

So, I went and gave Sonja's cupcakes another try. She gave us a dozen when we shot there yesterday. And I really liked Berries and Cream, which wasn't too sweet. So I bought myself a couple, plus one of another kind which I'd been curious about.

I think next time it'll just be berries and cream for me. Perhaps in July when the tingling from the sugar overload stops.

whale mail

What's better than snail mail? WHALE MAIL!

This is a drawing of a postcard I received last Friday. The kid (young lady, I should say) who sent it has long since arrived from Germany. I guess she posted it just before flying back here.

That's the journal entry written on the drawing of the postcard's back side. What's written on the actual postcard were some holiday and birthday greets plus some very nice words that brought a smile to my face.

She always strikes when I least expect it. =) And when she does, it's always a happy moment.

space

And the doodling mood continued.

I went on to doodle random things on my desk at home: bookpiles, a mug of markers and other stuff (like a hairclip and a nice yellow butterfly pen that I got from Keisha's party), Lightbox my snapshooter, my box of Moo Minicards, pens and pencils, a sharpener with pencil shavings, a drinking glass, and juice.

After that, I figured I could try drawing the whole desk to fit into one of the everydaymatters challenges (#82-art space).

sick

Caught a bug of sorts. Spent yesterday and most of today in bed, but now I'm feeling much better. Journaled about it and drew the things in my immediate surroundings.

Also decided to doodle the view outside my study. It's the view I space out to most of the time, my neighbor's green and white house.

I really am trying to start drawing and journaling more regularly again. To do this, I've started participating in the everydaymatters group drawing challenges. These drawings fit into three different themes (#87-lunch; #29-architectural; and #102-plug).

I didn't journal in the plug spread yet. I'll probably fill it in another time. I'll be going back to work tomorrow, but thankfully, not necessarily at the office. I'm not needed there and they said I can do my writing here at home and just email them the scripts. I'm glad I'm allowed another day to rest.

cupcakes

At the last minute, I picked up my journal and stashed it into my bag and brought it to the office today. I've done this a few times before and I end up just lugging it back home without having written anything in it.

Today was different.

I had some time to kill this afternoon while waiting for our graphics artist to render some slides for a presentation. Without even thinking about it much, I pulled out my journal and flipped it open to the last page that had anything in it --- which is just around 3 pages from the beginning of the book.

I had stuck a Cupcakes sticker there last Sunday, after buying three cupcakes by Sonja in Serendra. Yes, yes, I got curious about it.

Before I knew it, I was drawing cupcakes on the page. I filled in the opposite page, as well as the next spread.

I missed drawing.
