This double-exposure thing is fun, eh?

This is from my first ever attempt at double-exposure. Collab with F. The frames didn't align, but I like how some of the images can be spliced together; they flow into each other sort of. Here's one that I like. =) Yey. I think I might try this again!

Double-EX! XPro! Collab with thycursed of LomotionSG

I participated (thru Lomomanila) in a double-exposure collab with some members of Lomotion Singapore. I got a roll of exposed slide film from ian (aka thycursed) and shot over it. It's the Ian+Ian roll! Here are my favorites:

Lomo LC-A, Kodak Elitechrome, double-exposed and crossprocessed

ElitechromeXPRO-doubles (thycursed-ulan25)-37

That's ian (thycursed), i suppose, in the mirror; silhouette of leaf-less tree mine.

ElitechromeXPRO-doubles (thycursed-ulan25)-3

Person walking shot thycursed's. Kolektib image mine.

ElitechromeXPRO-doubles (thycursed-ulan25)-22

I'm guessing that's his foot on some seriously floral tiles. My feet on the lower right on a surface with less personality.

ElitechromeXPRO-doubles (thycursed-ulan25)-36

Mental note: Tree silhouettes work well in doublex.

ElitechromeXPRO-doubles (thycursed-ulan25)-33

The right side of the frame with the flowers -- mine. Yey! A successful doublex venture, methinks.

We Shot Bonifacio

Lomomanila lomowalls at Bonifacio High Street

For the past few weeks, my Lomomanila friends and I have been shooting around Bonifacio Global City for our biggest display of photos to date.

Last Friday, we put the display up: four panels (back-to-back) of vibrant and quirky snapshots, taken using various film cameras, arranged in a colorful mosaic.

Forgive the silly title. I couldn't think of anything better. :-P

It was a good call to leave The Moondog (my Canon 300D) and trust in all things lomo for this trip. I armed myself with more than 20 rolls of film (120s, 135s - negs and slides) and just winged it. Here I am at Bangui shooting the wind turbines, as taken by my new friend (our client, really) Char. With Petrie (Lomo LC-A) stuck to my face (yes, i look thru the viewfinder!), I snapped away.

I've been hoping to get at least one nice shot. I think this here is one nice shot. :) There are others, I'm just sifting thru the rolls now. Will upload later. Nanginginig pa ko sa saya. Hehehe.

I'm going to Ilocos, La Union, Bulacan (in that order) next week. Then to Misamis the following week.

I plan to NOT bring my DSLR. Kasi mabigat. Pero kinakabahan ako na wala akong makuhang magandang shots. I plan to bring three cameras only. LC-A, Holga, and Supersampler. I predict that I'll be keeping to the LC-A and Holga most of the time, while firing a few shots on the Supersamp now and then.

If I bring a digital camera, malilito na ko eh. I'll end up not shooting much. Feeling ko.

Pero afraiiiiid. What if I don't get anything???

Bahala na.

We've had very positive feedback so far, so I think it's safe to say it was a good first effort!

These photos were taken during the last lomokapihan in Ortigas Center. It was really more of a LoFI meeting, where Jonas presented his awesome layout for the magazine. (Round of piggy points for Jonas!!) A big yahoo for everyone who worked on the issue! Saya! =)

walking around in Makati

What I like best about Makati is that it's pedestrian friendly. I enjoy having real sidewalks and underpasses and skywalks that let me get to the mall or my office on foot in relative safety from motorists.

Now that I live here, I like it.

So, here. This is my neighborhood.

It was one of those days when the universe conspired to make things happen -- the sun was out, Karen Kristie and Ava both were free, I was free, and we could all just hang out. We went to the mall where Ava bought lots of goodies. We caught the sunset by the bay. We checked out that carnival (we bought no-ride tickets). And I clicked the day away. Yahoo!

lomomanila's 'witch project'

I'm still on a high from last Saturday's Witch Project shoot with my Lomomanila groupmates. I couldn't wait til the weekend to get my bws done, so I joined Lianne today and we went to Studio 58 in Makati to get our bw rolls processed (2 rolls from her LC-A; and 2 rolls from my Holga). I also had my slide film cross-processed while we were there.

We turned in our rolls at 10:30 and the lab guy told us our bw negs and contact prints will be ready for pickup by 4pm. But my xpro would be ready in a few minutes, so he told us we could wait for it. (left: Chiyomi and I -- photo by Lianne)

After 15 or so minutes, he came out with a strip of green negative. Haha. Looks like I'm getting reddish shots again, I told Lianne. We excitedly went to Glorietta to get my xpros scanned to a cd while we had lunch at A Veneto.

After an hour, we picked up my cd. I got a peek at some of the shots when the Fuji girl checked if the data burned correctly. I saw one shot I instantly liked and was relieved.

We checked all the shots as soon as we got into Lianne's car. Fortunately, I had my laptop with me! I couldn't contain my excitement.

We had several models that day, but my mind was set to shoot a lot of shots of Chiyomi. I'm glad I have shots of her that I really like.

CHIYOMI

Of course, there were other models, too. I'd have loved to shoot all of them but there were more than fifteen of us taking photos, it was a little hard to get model time.

I like this shot of Che, the pixie model.

I hope to God that I get some nice shots from my Holga. I'm so anxious. I'll find out tonight when Lianne picks them up for me. She's supposed to send me a message after she checks my contact sheet. I hope she'll say, "Ian, they're nice!" instead of "Ian, puro black."

Hahaha. Stay tuned.

Lomo-Walk This Way

[ soundtrack: The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour ]

My group lomomanila took The North Bank tour by Carlos Celdran. It was a toy camera outing in some of the most colorful areas of Manila:

Regina Building

Noah's Ark Escolta

1) Escolta street -- which boasts of beautiful architecture that are sadly marred by unsightly electric cables. Its history is very interesting, too.

2) Avenida Rizal -- now pedestrianized by the City of Manila. They sell everything there, from electronics to sex toys. All on the sidewalk.

lomo61_10

Potions and pedicure candle lady

3) Quiapo -- the Church and the markets. This photo was taken at the Evangelista street market beside the Quiapo church. It was crazily packed with people. And with the weather being wet and all, it was a little uncomfy but fun nonetheless. Be careful of pickpockets, though. My friend's celphone got stolen.

lomo61_04

I'm not all that ecstatic about the photos I was able to take. I didn't get to take a lot of shots, for one. I used up just one roll! I suppose it has something to do with the fact that since I was in unfamiliar territory, I was extra careful not to be left behind. Plus it was raining, and you spend a lot of time dodging people.

But, it was a happy day shooting with my Lomo LCA which I have missed so much.

[ soundtrack: Howard Shore - A Journey in the Dark ]

...I almost shrieked.

I tore up my entire house looking for the beautiful black box that I call Petrie. My Lomo LCA.

I found it by thinking back to when I used it last -- Enchanted Kingdom last November 1st.

I started wondering -- wait, did I send the film to the shop? AND DID I FORGET TO PICK UP THE PRINTS?**

Gad, I've been so out of it.

But, considering the emotional stuff I was going through all November, it's not surprising that I was on auto-pilot most of the time, only coming back to myself when it was time for a dose of good vibes.

I really ought to fix my house. As soon as I get through this episode, I will. So, that means next week.

Hayy, gotta get up in 4 hours. So, I guess I gotta try to sleep now.

**nope, the film is still inside.

a sunny start

The monsoon league last Sunday started bright and hot. It's my first time to join an official league and everything went ok. Our team lost one, and won one. (2 games per Sunday, 6 Sundays to complete the monsoon league). I was able to take Petrie (my Lomo LCA) out for a few shots of the nice green Alabang field and the bright bright blue sky. I wonder what the next Sundays will be like.

Lomo LCA

Speaking of Petrie, he will soon be joined by two new members in our little lomographic family. I won some contest on lomography.com and the prize is a few credits that I could use in the lomo store. I was able to catch the August promo featuring the Frogeye and the Pop9 bundled together for the price of one camera.

Updated my lomohome with September colorsplash pics.

A dog called Frisbee (also fondly called Kamot). He's a stray in UP, really, but he drops by whenever there's a game.

What I like about arriving early (around 4pm) in UP is that I get to run a couple of rounds first before a game. Or, I can practice throwing and catching; and i can get acquainted with the more tricky ones.

It came in handy today.

What the...a Digital Lomo in 2004?

A lomoUS member pointed us to an article in LePoint* about a digital lomo in the works. What the fuck? I don't know how I feel about that, but of course I'm interested on a level of pure curiosity at this point. But, what do I need a digital lomo for if I have Lightbox, my Canon A40? Any digital camera (or analog SLR, for sure) can replicate the photographic quirks of the LCA. And photoshop sure as hell can, too. This is getting weirder.

*Article is in French. For those who don't speak the language, here's a handy translation from the folk of LomoUS:

"When he stumbled on a friend's Lomo twelve years ago, it was love at first sight. Matthias Fiegl, from the Tyrol, appreciated the simplicity, the small size of this old Russian camera, and the unintentional effects that it produces -- especially at night. In 1992, Matthias and his childhood friend, Wolfgang Stranzinger, created the Lomographic Society and acquired the distribution rights for the Lomo throughout the world. Today, at 36 years old, Matthias savours his success. The site that he launched, www.lomography.com, acts as a billboard. In one year, 500,000 cameras and 5,000 books on the subject were sold. There, one can find about ten extraordinary analog cameras produced in Russia, Austria, or China, equiped with several lenses or color flashes. In his unquenchable thirst for novelty, Matthias announces to us the debut in 2004 of the first digital Lomo."

These days, I make sure I'm prepared.

When I bring Petrie around, and I'm meeting friends whom I haven't introduced to my Lomo camera, I slip a stash of lomographs in my bag, to serve as visual aids. My latest almost-recruit is my friend L. Yay!

I'm Lomo-dry these days, though. I haven't taken a shot that I'm wild about in 3 or 4 rolls! I'm drooling over that colorsplash flash still. The prints are groovy. No need to drop acid to go psychedelic. And I think I'm more inclined to get myself a supersampler rather than them action/cybersamplers. They're all quadlens babies, but the supersampler prints look more fun. See here.

But this has got to be the trippiest camera i've encountered so far.

So, everything boils down to the question of which one is the cutest. Accckkk....I cannot decide. Oh well, not that I'm going to get one anytime soon, but it's nice to think about these things.

Come to think of it, I should get that CD burner first before this quad-lens cutie. In any case, I doubt if I'm getting even that soon. (By soon I mean next week hahaha) I'll hold out on the camera until maybe May or June so that I could earn a little bit first with my new job in an old show.

I risk the crash because the flight is exhilirating.

It stands poised on the ground, oblivious to its bruised tip and splintered bones. Waits for wind and expert hands to launch it off the ground.
Feet away, two hands feel wind brush down the length of arms and line. A tug and a backstep sends it up, whizzing, spinning, surfing the waves of air. Wings spread out baring its chest to feel the wind's caress. Fluttering with each touch, shivers travel up its spine. Now soaring, now twisting with each pull of the line.
When the wind lets go and hands fail at their playing, it spirals down. Other times, it just rushes head first to the ground in a dizzying crash. It rests a while on the ground, taking notice this time of its old scars and new bruises. Until hands lovingly put it back together for another flight.
