Google Reader: your inbox for the web

RSS has been around for quite a while, but it's only now that I'm really starting to use it.

Google Reader is described by the folks at Google as your inbox for the web. Functioning like your regular email inbox but this time you have website updates coming into your inbox.

So, instead of you checking the different sites that you frequent for updates; you get alerted of updates. It's convenient and efficient.

You can read the updates right inside Google Reader. This depends on whether the website you have subscribed to has enabled rss readers to view entire posts on the reader or just an excerpt. If it's just an excerpt, there will be a link to the site itself for the whole article.

It's easy to add subscriptions. You either paste the url of the feed itself in the "ADD SUBSCRIPTION" field or the url of the site (and GR will search for the feed automatically.)

You'll notice XML or RSS buttons on some websites. That links to the location of the feed. You can right-click on this and copy the link location, and paste this in Google Reader.

You can also organize your feeds into categories (blogs, news, etc.) Such a nifty tool for webjunkies like me.

Blogger users, make sure you enable site feeds (check Settings) so that people can subscribe to your site. =)

Go on, try it! :)
