thirteen times three

Thirteen is the title of one of my favorite tracks from one of my new favorite old bands: Big Star. I found out just today that Elliot Smith recorded it. His version is so much more heartbreaking. I supposed it's due to the quality of his voice -- kinda frail and whispering and generally just sad. Maybe the fact that his voice is accompanied by just a guitar has something to do with it.
But, I still like the original better (not because it's the original) because I just like the lighter way it was played, and only slightly melancholy.
Wilco performs the song in Big Star Small World, a tribute album that came out in the late 90s. It retained the tone of Big Star's original.
It sounds like an afternoon in the 70s, with images playing back in scratchy film. The same way Elton John's Mona Lisas and Madhatters (and Tiny Dancer) sound to me. An afternoon in the 70s, yeah that's it. Man.
